Why downloads and not prints?

Several reasons:

• More than anything, it’s an ecological choice. When you can have a print made locally, I find it a little silly to make a print on one continent and then fly it to another continent.

• A print may not last forever, but your download does. Did your print fade, rip or was stolen? Make a new one!

• When your life changes, your art can change with it. Did you move or redecorate? Why not get a new print in a different size and on, say, aluminum instead of museum-quality paper? Or, why not on a silk scarf?

• Forget about prints entirely and try a digital photo frame that can display your whole collection of digital art.

All right, I’m convinced. What do I do with this file I downloaded?

Why not print it yourself ? These days, even low-cost color home printers do a great job. And cheap but attractive frames can be found just about anywhere. (If you print your file on A4 paper, mount it in a 21x30-centimeter frame.)

For larger sizes, we recommend using a photo-printing service. We like these shops:

Whitewall

Loxley Colour

Bay Photo

White House Custom Colour

EZ Prints

Can I make a bunch of prints and sell them?

We’d rather you didn’t. When you download one of our photo files, we grant you the right to use the file, or prints made from the file, for personal use only. You can make prints, of course. You can even use one of our photos on your personal website, as long as you credit “Mariana Nastas, @36minutes.” You cannot use a photo for any commercial purpose.

Anything else?

One thing: If you order a print, make sure the shop does NOT subject your prints to “automatic image optimization.” This is usually the default when ordering prints. We optimize the hell out of these photos. Automatic image optimization will undo that work and leave you with an unsatisfactory print.
